Hi guys,

A little busy with other things, It's been a while since I'm out of PE :embarrassed:

Recently, I tried to play around with Windows 10 preview (10074, 10122, ... ,10162, 10166) and 10240 now.
Here is my beginning with Win10PESE x86/x64, pure 64-bits, without the great WoW64 support.
It seems that we will have to do without, unfortunately  and to use 64-bit apps for x64 building.

Few notes:
Great work Chris

Not sure I can help with WOW64. Looks like the problem is smss.exe again, but sadly this file is protected since Win8.
Thanks JFX

I use 7zip to extract what I think might be useful from winsxs, (may be possible to do that with wimlib, not sure how). Then use wimlib to delete winsxs from winre.wim, and extract the rest.
Thanks SIW2 for this "less slow" tip,  for the extraction for the SmallFull choice (1-Copy Files)

At first build, the registry is prepared then saved in Shell & Config with time savings for the next builds.
Registry files are saved in Workbench\Win10PESE\%WIMName%_%WIMEditionID%_%OSVersion%_%SourceArch%_%DistLang%

Thank you for initial feedback :great: and for the following, now

Hello ChrisR, my first reaction is: WOW!! So wonderful to see you're still around (you had me worried there for a bit), and working right "at the heart of the matter", where it counts most: Trying to tame the "BEAST" that is Windows 10...

I'm really looking forward to testing Win10PESE, it will be a nice thing to do in this cold and rainy weekend.

I've said it before, but Windows 10 is another very "strange" MS release:
- On the one hand, they just could have called it Windows 8.2, it doesn't really qaulify for a 2-number version jump. The metro stuff in Windows 8 can be considered a gigantic failure (who uses the app store?), but still they insist on changing things to a "modern UI" format in Windows 10 (control panel, start menu, etc).
- On the other hand: Under the hood, Windows 10 is not bad at all: Of course it's new, so it has the latest drivers etc., and the "footprint" hasn't really grown when compared to W7/W8, both in setup files and memory requirements.

Thanks again for Win10PESE, I hope you know what you're getting into, I hope all the experts at TheOven will help you make this thing work!

... did a quick standard 32bit build ... FANTASTIC (or should I say Fantastique!)
Opening my q.iso (portable aps, of course it auto-mounts in W8+), most of the stuff seems to work just fine. Next I'll try adding my little Autohotkey setup, so everything's automatic and keyboard-driven.
This is such a cool surprise, ChrisR, I will enjoy testing this sooo much, I'll report back later, I hope others will like it too!!

[Edit1:Got the 32bit build running on 1gb laptop now, running silent and smooth, using "only" 459 435mb]
[Edit2: Using only 2 scripts in "Apps" tree: Autohotkey autorun and "Copy Acronis Drivers 32bit". Now q.iso is automounted and all my tools are fully portable and keyboard-shutcut driven. For example: Diskmanagement, Bootice, HWInfo, TrueImage, UltraISO, OSFMount, TrueCrypt, 7Zip, TCCLE, Filesync, WinRar, NirsoftSearch, Procmon, TightVNC, NirsoftTools, WordExcel97, Sumatra, ACDSee, Paintshop, FSView+Capture, Terabyte Image, Active Disk Image, Macrium Reflect, Drive Snapshot, Aomei, Paragon)]

Hopefully JFX can help out with the WoW64 stuff? :embarrassed:

Hi Atari,

I fully agree with you on Windows 10 with their modern apps, App store. It seems that only Microsoft believe in.
As soon as I see loading circle, I want to close it as soon. I'll still stay a good time with Windows 7, it seems.
For the core, it remains of course 8.2.

For now, It is better to use the "Small Full" File copy in this Beta, more operational (in 1-Copy files).
The standard file copy, does not work well for now, it lacks things.

I will continue slowly, time is short for me, currently.
Hopefully some guys will help on this beginning.

Looks great Chris.

The start8 thing is useful - good find

I think I had a go at it a while back. I may have had wow working ok, cant remember now. I will see if I can find what I did, although there may be differences on newer builds.

Well SIW2, it would be totally, utterly and completely awesome if you could help with WoW64...

I'm having a ton of fun trying W10PESE ("Win Ten Peasy", finally a 10-related name that sounds cool!), the 32bit is working just fine, now I'm trying to find as many 64bit replacements to my 32bit tools I used in W8PESE64/8.1SE64 until now.
Some of them are easily found (Autohotkey, Bootice, Regfont, HWInfo, NirCmd, could have/ should have used these already, of course), then there are some 32bit aps that were just for "fun" on 64bit PE anyway (Office97Lite, some others probably), but also some I really like, that have no 64bit version (XYPlorer, BGInfo).
Of course, there are alternatives for these as well, but having WoW64 working would be just so cool...  :great:

Well, to be honest I would expect some more reactions by now for this great new achievement by ChrisR, but so be it... Maybe most PE fans are (understandably?) not great fans of anything called "Windows 10".
Still, I think it's great that you "fixed" it for us.
Just wanted to share I found some nice 64bit tools on the new Active@ Boot Disk 10 (which has also switched to 64bit PE just a few weeks ago). These tools are fully portable, so they can be simply copied over to Win10PESE. Some standard ones that anybody can find on their own (Sumatra, 7zip), others I didn't know (HoneyView pic viewer, maybe others) and then of course the fine Active@ tools themselves (disk imaging, disk editor, disk monitor, file recovery, etc. etc.)
I miss XYPlorer the most, but maybe it should have had a 64bit version by now (as a lot of users will confirm on their forum)...

I found what I think is the old wim with wow support, but the thing won't boot now.Not surprised, it was the very early win10 preview.

Thanks for looking SIW. WoW64 is SO useful

I have just tried now with latest build 10147, It doesn't work as well, with an application error in explorer.exe
It will be difficult to follow changes made before RTM, it seems.
Let's say the skeleton is ready

However, a small change to avoid a building error with build 10147

Thank You ChrisR for starting the skeleton for Win10PE_SE and all the great work you do. I'm working with it whenever I can find some spare time and hope to be able to contribute something.

Hi JFX,

On my side, I had tried to trace smss.exe with Procmon Boot Logging but without going further.
Thanks for your skilled answer on WoW64   So, it seems difficult, unfortunately

#
To continue to test with windows 10147 and without the boring explorer application error, here is a small program, plugin to hide the window, for now .
To put in Tweaks folder  * HideExplorerError.Script (13.73 kB - downloaded 143 times.)
With this build 10147, in "1-Copy Files" we must keep the "Small Full" file copy (standard is not ready) and to choose install.wim software hive for a faster startup.

Yes, nice to hear JFX's opinion on the matter. So for now, it seems for W10PESE we have to focus on 64bit tools. I just wanted to add that the 64bit Sumatra PDF reader in Active@ Boot Disk 10 is not that "standard" after all, there is no normal 64bit version, so once again I'd like to share the tip to get as many 64bit tools from A@BD as you can
(Get the setup file here: http://download.lsoft.net/BootDiskSetup.exe, extract with InnoUnp, find "BootDisk.iso", get sources\boot.wim, try the tools).
I'll ask around on the MDL forum as well, maybe somebody has a tip for WoW64 (1% chance?)

Oh well, patience is a virtue, and of course we don't have to throw our current WoW64-PESE's out the window(s)

It seems there is a small progress for WoW64 subsystem with build 10147
The 32-bit process starts but not more.
No log either with: X:\Windows\SysWOW64\cmd.exe /c echo TestWoW64 > X:\Windows\SysWOW64\TestWoW64.log

Welcome Orang Sakuragi,

You know, my beginning on Win10PESE is just a preview, not so bad but still a beta.
I do not have much time currently to look at the different components.
and I think there will still be many changes in RTM version, no need to go too fast

Even on real Win10 preview, I did not watch to Bitlocker. I do not know if there are many changes compared to 8.1
You can maybe try to start by reading Win8.1SE Bitlocker plugin or the one of sp-star.

I'll be on vacation for the Win10 RTM release, if time allows, I would go further in September.
I'm pretty sure, that you and other Chinese PE friends will have already well  advanced on Win10PE

Related to UIRibbonRes.dll bug, a tip for Paint, WordPad or Photo Viewer,
You can put the exe in an other folder with UIRibbonRes.dll next to.
Ex: copy mspaint.exe, UIRibbonRes.dll in "Windows\Accessories" folder and mspaint.exe.mui in "Windows\Accessories\zh-CN"

Thanks, that's good for the explorer error  hoping it will stay like that.
Unfortunately, it seems that it will be difficult for loading WoW64 subsystem, without Microsoft changes on smss.
