I will manually download & install the KB3153199 security fix on my Win7 machines to resolve the very long WU scan problem.

Worked for me.

What worked for me was mentioned here: http://www.infoworld.com/article/3058260/microsoft-windows/heres-how-to-significantly-speed-up-windows-7-scans-for-updates.html

The Windows6.1-KB3145739-xXX.msu update is what did the trick. Note the XX in the name is the arch of the OS.

I see a lot of different solutions now, all over the interweb...
I, too, have been plagued by the stupid long delays for about a year now.

But this makes me wonder: Is there really a "hotfix" solution, or do you think MS just turned the swith on their W7 update servers back from "slow" to "fast"?
I did a full updaterun last Tuesday as well, and for the first time in a year, updates were superfast. Even faster than 8.1 and 10, this time around (I run 5 old laptops at the same time at 10:00 Redmond time on Patch Tuesday, just for kicks).

I will try to do some more testing over the weekend...

Thanks the tips anyhow, good to see something happening on this issue, as long as it's fixed, it's not really important *how* it was fixed (but we OvenFolk want to know the details, of course).

Not sure but I have a passel of machines here that will fail repeatedly, some after HOURS of searching.  I applied the patch I mentioned and they all find updates in minutes.  Some might fail once during the first run after a few minutes, but all work quickly after the patch is applied.

I have to admit though, for the last dozen or so computers I've done I simply added the patch without trying updates first.  So god only knows what is really happening.

I did some tests (starting with 100% clean Windows 7 SP1u every time, from TrueImage backup).

Roootman's suggestion worked for me, I will keep on doing the tests around 10-20 times, to make sure it's no coincidence.

Reading through the pages you quoted, I found this website that seems to make a lot of sense!!! (Most of the solutions above are mentioned there as well):

Did a bunch more tests now (starting from scrath every time).
Seems the tips at http://wu.krelay.de/en/ are spot on, installing the latest WU client (or one of the most recent) seems to do the trick, and do it reliably. I'm testing this on clean installs, so not sure how other systems would react, but this website seems to be the only one who knows exactly what this is all about...

And before you forget: On a clean install, don't install the latest WU client during the (stalling) search, but do it first, then start the search manually after that.

Looks like MDL wizard Abbodi1406 created the ultimate and perfect solution!!

http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/19461-Windows-7-Hotfix-repository?p=1253845&viewfull=1#post1253845

I tested this on 3 systems (clean installs, integrated it in install.wim) and so far it seems to work!

All credits go to Abbodi1406!
