Hi Rincewindwiz,
I am another absolute newbie with the same background as yours and like you trying to build a Win7pese x86.
I did get a basic working build by following Kyhi's guide for beginners (http://theoven.org/index.php?topic=1666.0).

I then found out that the time needed for acquisition of the knowledge required to build a Win7pese USB to my liking using the information scattered at theoven.org was huge. I do not have that time (also my requirements are probably hard to fulfill).

As an alternative I searched for a very basic ready-made x86 win7pese that would allow me to easily add portable programs with shortcuts to them on the desktop and/or the start menu.
I explored many releases (Gandalf, Sergei Strelec...). They are never basic, take a lot of room on the usb, only work approximately, so-called English versions are in fact Russian for a large part and some of these build include pirated applications. They allow adding portable programs, but without links.

I finally found what I was looking for: A very simple build, but with the possibility to add dynamic shortcuts to any portable program that you add to the USB.
It was released by someone called Carlos as a Win7pe for the vision impaired (it uses NVDA which you can turn off if you don't need it). It is a small download and everything works well. The method of adding shortcuts is simple and practical.
I built a complete, modifiable and update-able rescue live USB based on Carlos's build in a very short time.
Carlos introduces his build in a Techtalk blog: (search for "Win7PE and Win10PE Update (dynamic shortcuts for portable applications) ". I am not allowed to post external links.
The link to the downloads is at the bottom of the page. Win7 and Win10 are available, both x86 and x64. A very neat job!

I wish I knew how Carlos built his project to enable those dynamic shortcuts (shortcuts that are added while the PE is booting). If anyone knows, please tell us.

Hi Pan2fire,

I do not have that time (also my requirements are probably hard to fulfill).
Your problem not related to topic. At least spend time to read topic or create a new topic.

Projects gains huge time giving options, you need to spend less time for your personal special tasks.
A good path is quick check or read FAQ

As an alternative I searched for a very basic ready-made x86 win7pese that would allow me to easily add portable programs with shortcuts to them on the desktop and/or the start menu.
Solutions provided at FAQ
search Portable

probably Carlos use one of them

(dynamic shortcuts for portable applications)
Such thing available less than 2012, even with the start of first PE (2004 and less),
only requires some time.  Carlos probably use one of them

With Available options on current projects:
I just updated Apps\System Tools\"Portable Finder CMD" to v17 (as written on FAQ)

with enabled "Portable Finder CMD" plugin , when you boot, It will search for
TheOven_Dynamic.cmd
at root of drives (ex: usb) and if found execute

To test:
+ Enable Apps\System Tools\"Portable Finder CMD"
+ Make your build
+ create TheOven_Dynamic.cmd inside one of your usb stick or drive (ex: F:\heOven_Dynamic.cmd)
ex:
TheOven_Dynamic.cmd
Code: [Select]
nircmd.exe shortcut "%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe" "~$folder.desktop$" "CMD Test"
Exit
+ boot from cd or usb with the project,
=>
You should see "CMD Test" shortcut on your desktop after some seconds (press F5 to refresh desktop)

If all ok, you can modify TheOven_Dynamic.cmd the way you like.
Still you need to spend time to figure out with TheOven_Dynamic.cmd, to do things other than shortcut.[/s]
If you do not know about .cmd edit, (so called batch edit) there are many websites available.

Further, do not reply current post, open a new topic, I do not have time to split topics for now.
:turtle:

Topic Split to:

see

with the possibility to add dynamic shortcuts to any portable program that you add to the USB.
You can also use the good sh.exe utility developed by nikzzzz for that exactly and with additional features: Shortcut, Add registry, Autorun, autoexit
Nice utility, maybe Nikzzzz could present it here
Sh.exe - programmes portables Manager: http://usbtor.ru/viewtopic.php?t=298
Google Translate:

There is a demo program for testing and understand the config dile Sh.ini and the files link *.shl (eg: "link.shl") next to each apps, cmd
copy the content of ShDemo_for_Win, DemoPrograms folder included, to the root of your USB key.
and Run sh.exe or sh_x64.exe
