Hi,
I did not find existing threads with clear hints for the problem addressed here.
The goal is to repair boot, disk and partition control data. It is a virtual disk partitioned to MBR scheme with one system (active, boot) partition formatted to NTFS.
It is Windows Vista. It does not boot. The plan is to try fixing disk and partition control data using
Recovery Environment and bootrec utility.
Is Win10PE suitable to accomplish this task, bootrec on-board?
Win10PE was built for other purposes and is available, however in a version as
issued by c't magazine.

No bootable Vista install media is available so I will try 3rd party solution like win10pe.
Actually Vista original DVD is available but not usable, it is a license of OEM type.
Assigned laptop shows permanent failure of graphics or screen - logon merely via remote desktop possible.
So solutions like win10pe are the only hope.

Case history
Vista physical machine was converted to virtual machine inclusively addressed disk.
From this point of time on all handling addresses the virtual clone only.
Originally disk featured two partitions: recovery partition opening disk and the system one in sectors following recovery part.
As recovery partition hadn't been used for long time (other backup solutions in use) the administrator decided to slipstream it
then to move system partition towards disk first sectors - in order to be able to reduce size of virtual disk file.
However the guess is that boot data got inconsistent upon moving system partition towards disk start sectors.

There is no Win10PE project here.

Ask at c't magazine forums.
