VMware Tools

Post by VeeDub »

Hello,

I've been doing some work in a VMware VM.

To obtain optimal performance for the guest OS, it is recommended to install VMware Tools

There doesn't appear to be a VMware Tools script.

Does anybody else ever use VMware VM's, and if so, what do they do with respect to VMware Tools?

Hi VeeDub,

This is a very old article I don't know if it can help.

Hi MaloK,

Good find!

I now understand why there isn't a VMware Tools script.

The process looks complicated, but if I end up doing a lot of work in VMware I may attempt it.

For now, I think I'll work as-is and accept the performance hit.

Thanks

Hi,

I use VBox and the only thing I do is, to extract the Mouse and video drivers from the Addition package and integrate them.
It does have great impact on video performance. When you shake a window frantically from left to right the screen doesn't tears to gazillion of artifacts and run very well with VBox 3d enabled.

Maybe you can try the same with VMware drivers ?

I have made a plugin for Vmare Tools, it has partially worked, since I am having problems with the video driver and I do not get the maximum automatic resolution.
I have not tried to integrate the drivers directly to the project, I have only extracted the files and the necessary registry entries, maybe integrating the drivers the automatic resolution will work, but the truth is that I have not had time to do the tests.
The shared folders do not work either, but that is a Win10XPE problem, as it does not allow me to scan the network for computers, shared folders and map network drives.
However, the mouse, the file transfer between the guest machine and the host machine by dragging and dropping files does work.

@ismael_mn

Sorry, never felt the need to add the tools to a PE for this project
use VM Virtualbox for testing built iso's but that's all
Always use the latest distribution file for your particular project and any post-release updated plugins. If you add files from old postings relating to previous versions, don't be surprised if they cause errors.

I fully understand that you do not have this need and you use Virtual Box
But in this post the topic of integrating Vmware Tools to Win10XPE and my response was directed to the OP.

Due to the subject, I decided to finish the plugin, here it is, fully functional to test our iso's at full resolution and being able to transfer files by drag and drop.

I hope you find it useful and if there is any inconvenience, let me know.
